August 2015- Joe Balderas

Joe Anthony Balderas is a 5’ 6’’, 115 pound, 2015 Graduate of YES Prep Southeast High School in Houston, TX. Joe was a member of the Cross Country and Track team for six years at YES, and served as the Varsity team captain for both teams since his freshman year.

Joe started running at YES his 7th grade year in 2009. Since that year, Joe has pushed towards his ultimate goal of winning State with his team. Joe not only accomplished his ultimate goal but earned numerous other accolades. In Track, Joe won two individual district championships and qualified for Regionals in the 2 mile, 1 mile and 800m. In Cross Country, Joe has been a part of five Districts Championships, qualifying three times for Regionals in Cross Country, and he is a part of the first ever team in the history of YES Prep Public Schools to win the State Championship. Additionally, Joe earned the individual title of State Champion his senior year. He currently holds the school record in the 5K with the time of 16:27.3, and he is the first individual in YES to have won a State Championship title.

This Fall Joe will be attending the University of Houston- Downtown, where he plans on majoring in Engineering and will go forth in joining the running team there at UHD.

Joe truly loves running; he is grateful to have run with such amazing teammates and honored to have a coach that continually believed in him. He wouldn’t be the man he is today if it weren’t for Cross Country, and is excited to see what the future has in store for him.
